Hello,
thanks for all your great advice, newsletters, and articles. You provide a lot of really helpful information!
Here's my question (and background info): we recently rented our house to a family of 4 (2 parents, 2 minor kids). The wife (we'll call her Liz) asked if her adult sister-in-law could move in w/ her 2 minor kids. We insisted to do a background check on the sister-in-law (we'll call her Jane), and that *if we accept her,* all 3 adults (Liz, her husband, and Jane) would become Co-Tenants under a new Lease. Liz says she wants to help her out, as family, until Jane gets back on her feet; she thinks this might be about 3 months or so. We are okay with this. My question is–once we accept Jane as a Co-Tenant, are we stuck with her as a Tenant until she decides to move out (barring any legal action we can take to evict her)? If so, is there a legal way to accept Jane as a Tenant on a temporary or conditional basis? Also, if/when Jane moves out, can we revert back to our original Lease with Liz and her husband w/o having to redo the original Lease again? (Like if we write an adendum to the new Lease, just b/w the Landlords, Liz and her husband and signed, stating the above?)
Thank you! Please let me know ASAP, as we will meet with Jane next week.
